Scholarly and Peer-Reviewed Journals

Scholarly journals contain articles written by and for experts in a discipline or within cross-disciplinary areas. Articles in these journals:

  • Cover research and scholarly interpretations
  • Report on original research and experimentation
  • Use specialized vocabulary reflecting the disciplines covered
  • Assume knowledge or background on the part of the reader
  • Not all scholarly journals are peer-reviewed

Peer-reviewed journals contain articles:

  • that have successfully gone through a formal review process

The peer-review process may include:

  • evaluation by scholars in the author's field or speciality
  • expected standards of expertise
