The Advanced Search

In the Advanced Search you have options to narrow your search.  Using the term "suffrage" the search returns almost 35,000 results. The term can be changed to "women's suffrage" to return 1,627.  Quotation marks preserve a concept of phrase.

On the left of the Advanced Search screen you have options to narrow results.

The first choice is relevance, oldest first etc.  The next is publication date which you can use to limit by era,  and then Document Type.

These are important distinctions.  Editorials and letters to the Editor are good sources to find the mood of the day on a subject. Front page articles indicate the importance of a story.  More options include reviews and tables of contents that can further inform on the subject.

Though seemingly obvious, "subjects" are more than keywords.  Keywords are words that researchers use to define their topic.  Subjects are words defined in a "controlled vocabulary" to represent those topics. Moreover, they are hot links to connect to more like articles.

The Location and Person limiters function the same as subjects.  See the left column.
